Chelsea without progress in negotiations with midfielder

A revolution in Chelsea’s midfield has been brewing for months. The key link is expected to be Mason Mount, who still has not signed a new contract.

  • Mason Mount has a contract with Chelsea valid until June 30, 2024
  • The club is keen on a new contract for the Englishman
  • However, there is currently no progress in talks

Chelsea needs to do better

Eighth place in the Premier League table before the World Cup break, is probably not satisfactory for Chelsea. The Londoners, looking ahead in the league table, are currently focused on overtaking fourth-placed Tottenham (eight points lost) to play in the next edition of the Champions League.

The present is not easy for Chelsea. However, the future is expected to be bountiful in London. The club is already trying to take care of the staff for next year’s games. Changes may occur especially in the midfield. This is because it is uncertain whether The Blues will continue to be represented by N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, whose contracts expire on July 1, 2023.

One of Chelsea’s pillars, Mason Mount, has a longer contract. The Englishman is an alumni of The Blues, so it’s no surprise that the club is keen to have the 23-year-old as a part of the club for multiple seasons. The Londoners have been courting him since this summer. Indeed, that’s when work began on extending Mount’s contract. To Chelsea’s negative surprise, they are not going as well as in the case of, for example, Reece James. Negotiations with Mount have stalled, and talks will have to resume after the World Cup. The midfielder will then have 18 months left on his current contract. There will therefore be no panic on the Chelsea side. Especially since the club is confident of buying Christopher Nkunku in the summer, and there are other young and talented midfielders on target.
