Did the media lie about Frenkie de Jong’s salary?

There have been many recent reports about Frenkie de Jong’s salary at FC Barcelona. Everything had a lot to do with a potential transfer to Manchester United, which ultimately did not materialize. Despite the agreement between the two clubs, the Dutchman did not want to leave the Catalan Pride.

The Dutch resentant has come under fire for his high salary, given that the club is currently facing a financial crisis and trying to comply with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules. De Jong received a huge raise from former Barcelona president Bartomeu and is expected to earn €20 million net this season and as much as €25 million next campaign, with some €20 million in deferred wages included.

However, it was previously reported that Barcelona had been negotiating with De Jong at the start of the season that it wanted to tear up his current contract and return to his initial 2019 deal, when he first signed with the club. Reports claimed that the midfielder refused to take a pay cut, and fans were furious with the 25-year-old. However, the Dutchman corrected those reports, saying that he had agreed to a pay cut during the first three years of his career at the club and insisted that his salary was not as high as people think.

– Many lies were spread about my salary. For the first three years of playing at Barcelona, I agreed to a reduction in salary. Now the salary has returned to the normal rate and has been adjusted for previous arrangements. Hence, the amount looks much higher than it actually is. I think many people don’t understand this,” De Jong stated.

De Jong has made it clear that he wants to stay at Barcelona, but the 25-year-old is said to be furious at the way he was treated by Xavi this season. The Barcelona coach has left him on the substitutes’ bench in several important matches.
